What are you getting for MPG?

Hi,

What are you all getting for MPG with the AWD model? I rented a FWD one for two weeks and was getting an average of 40 MPG after driving mostly on the highway for two weeks but the rating is only 32.

Thanks!

My 23 AWD XLE+JBL is getting about 31-33mpg combined highway and around town.
That's also hauling around a couple hundred extra pounds of tools and test gear in the rear.

Haven't had it on the interstate a lot yet because I wanted to break it in first.
When I have, it seems to get about 34mpg at 75mph if I don't have a strong head-wind.
Again, mine is just now getting to about 1k miles on it, so it's really not very broken in yet.
I expect it will improve a bit. Even if it doesn't I'm fine with what I'm getting.
For an AWD SUV with this much room, and this nice a ride, this kind of mileage seems very good to me.

Remember the AWD has independent rear suspension, so it's likely to ride/handle better.
The XLE is really worth the extra dollars too IMHO. Many extras you don't think about, like a rear wiper.

The LE also has the standard rear window wiper. I suggest everyone carefully review the equipment list by model on the Toyota website before even considering a purchase.
I have heard people in this group purchase an L and were surprised when they got the car that it did not have the rear wiper.

Ok...Thank you..I stand corrected.
I was under the impression that only the XLE had the rear wiper, but it sounds like both the LE and XLE have it.

In my mind, the Cross XLE AWD is still an incredible bargain! It got me so close to a Rav4 that I feel no need to spend the extra almost $5k for a Rav now. And that's after spending quite a bit of time living with both.

I get similar MPG on the highway with AWD. However, in the settings, there is a way to turn off AWD. I tested the MPG with the AWD turned off and was getting an average of 1.5 to 2 extra MPG. Since that is fairly insignificant, I just leave it in AWD.

It does improve after a few thousand miles. My commuting mpg were similar to yours but has improved with the summer blend of fuels now becoming available. All highway mpg are near 40 mpg. It's a great little SUV.

I'm not sure I know where the setting is to turn off the AWD.?.
Can you educate me on that one?
Driving cross-country on the interstate in summer the AWD isn't of much use, and I'd love the extra mileage.
In the mountains, I'd leave it on all the time though. Ya never know.

Start the engine and wait a few seconds for the settings to load. Using the arrows on the left side of the steering wheel, scroll left two screens. Scroll down to the icon beneath "vehicle settings" and long press. Now scroll down to the "car" icon and click ok. Click on "display contents" and select AWD on or off.

Great!
I didn't know it was there!
I'll check it next time I'm in the Cross and report back.

I get between 33 and 35 MPG on my XLE FWD with 90% small town and suburban driving. I keep an egg under the accelerator to prevent lead foot driving. :giggle:

My firmware must be different form yours. I can get the AWD icon, but there's no switching it on or off.

Are you getting this on the Hwy?

I haven’t dug into it that far because I do about 1/2 Hwy and 1/2 reg. So that’s the average.
Probably more like 31-32 Hwy and 36mpg 55mph and under

Coming from a 2015 Corolla cvt sedan I am really impressed with the mileage. I really don’t notice a huge difference even though I was getting 38-40 with the sedan.

See if you get a different display using the analog mode.

Try the same procedure in analog mode. Click 'ok' when you see the 'words' AWD. That will toggle it on and off.

Twice now, I've had the chance to take a long highway drive (steady 70 mph) and got 42.3 mpg on the first drive and 41.9 on the second drive. Both times with the AWD feature turned off. Pretty good in my opinion.

I can see the AWD control on page 450 of the manual...but I still don't seem to be able to get to the right screen on mine to switch it off or on. I wish Toyota hadn't made this so complicated! One of the blank buttons on the lower left side of the steering wheel (on the dash) would have been nice.

Those are certainly stellar MPG numbers! About 6-7 MPG more than I've been able to achieve in my AWD XLE...but I'm still running with the AWD turned on (because I'm too dense to figure out how to turn it off). I did get 35 MPG average on a 200 mile run yesterday. Mileage continues to improve as I get closer to 2000 miles. I'm completely fine with 35 from an AWD SUV. But like everyone else, I'd be happy to squeeze a few more miles out of each gallon.

In summer I rarely need the AWD on. I could turn it off in May, and back on in October...IF I can remember how to turn it back on. :)
