Vehicle malfunction at Start/Stop

6485 Views 42 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  OKN
My Cross shuts down as it was designed to at stops. Every once in a while it throws dash lights and won't automatically restart when the brake is released. One time on a hill it started rolling backward. I have to put the vehicle in park, turn off, and turn back on. Then put in Drive and I can drive again. Super frustrating and nerve racking. Dealer has no idea what to do.

It has happened to others. Seems to be related to wet weather. Any advice?

My experience is similar to this video: Toyota Corolla Cross 2023 Engine Shut Off Malfunction

I had same issue, and the dealer replaced battery under the warranty by claiming a bad cell in that battery, which may cause the issue. However I got same mulfunction again with brand new battery! I will be visiting the dealer soon.

My cross is currently at the dealership as this exact same thing happened to me 3 times. First time it happened I brought it right away and they told me the computer system wasn’t communicating with the car and said it was fixed. It happened again 2 more times and I explained that it only haves when the windshield wipers are on and I use the auto start/stop system. They have escalated the issue to Toyota Canada. Toyota Canada wants them to replicate the issue. I currently have a loaner car until there’s a solution.
Did you got a reply. Same problem happened with my 23 cross last week.
Had the same auto stop/start issue on my 2023 Corolla Cross 3 times. And yes, my windshield wipers were on "intermittent" at the time. Took it to the dealer Tuesday AM. Saw this thread Tuesday PM and called the dealer Wednesday AM to tell them that it happened when the wipers were on. They were able to replicate the issue and filed a tas case with Toyota. "tas indicated condition is under investigation from Toyota"... "was told by fts vehicle should have a software update available later this month for this concern." ..."At this time, customer can avoid this condition if wipers are "off" or in "low or high speed" settings. This concern only happens when wipers are in intermittent position and vehicle goes into "Stop Start" more at full stop in gear." They told me I would be getting a letter from Toyota later in the month about the issue and not to use the intermittent setting and auto stop/start simultaneously. So, I'm just turning off the Auto stop/start every time I start the car until they have the software fix.

Today my cross 2023 will take him for the same problem and they told me to leave him because there was another car with the same problem that they were going to contact Toyota to see what solution they had.

What solution did they give you?
My dealer asked me to bring it in during rain. Of course it has been dry. It's tough to schedule a visit based on weather... Looks like I'll just wait for the SW update.
Edit: They couldnt find any error and asked me to come back if I experience same malfunction. And, I have more issues like rattling noise under 15miles/h, first shift jolts and more.. Frustrating..

I am at the dealer now. After my several complains, they said, Technical Assistance (TAS) asks for a remote complete diagnose. But the good thing is, they will do the test by turning wipers on, and the team will be checking all values or electrical waves during the test.
I will be sharing the results or any possible fix (I hope.).

Just happened today. First time. 900 miles on the dot. Heavy rain, wipers on, start/stop on. Sitting at a red light my car throws the check engine light. Immediately I put on my hazards. Cars honking and a few middle fingers given from other drivers. I’m ready to get rid of this car.
Recién sucedió hoy. Primera vez. 900 millas en punto. Lluvia intensa, limpiaparabrisas encendidos, arranque/parada encendidos. Sentado en un semáforo en rojo, mi automóvil arroja la luz de verificación del motor. Inmediatamente me puse mis peligros. Autos tocando la bocina y algunos dedos medios dados por otros conductores. Estoy listo para deshacerme de este auto.

That's unfortunate...Sorry to hear it.
Since your car has such a HUGE problem, I think you should get rid of the car...And sell it to me for 50% of what you paid for it 900 miles ago. I'll be happy to pay you that, cash on the spot for a car that's SO disappointing, and has such major problems.

OR perhaps...You could just push the little button on the center console to disable the "Stop/Start" when you first start the car. I know it's a huge inconvenience, but it prevents this problem from ever happening till the software update from Toyota is ready, which hopefully will come soon so all these baby's can quit whining about their terrible cars.

Sorry, but I'm used to automotive forums where people complain about real problems....Like tens of thousands of engines blowing-up, and then the owners $45,000 cars are totally dead, and stuck at the dealers for many months waiting for replacement motors to arrive. Anyone heard of the 2015-2020 Ford/Lincoln 2.0L motors?...that's what those owners are really dealing with everyday!...I know, I just go rid of one. I would have been VERY happy to have traded you my $45k Lincoln MKC for your malfunctioning Cross.

Sure LOVE my Cross!...even with this incredibly minor inconvenience!

Eso es desafortunado... Lamento escucharlo.

Carne de resRegarding your opinion. And it really is a small problem but if the car with only a little mile has that problem. How many more serious problems can you present as time passes. Moreover, since December they are reporting that small problem as you say one of the best car brand has not been able to solve it. If it were serious I think it is better to throw it away.

Good for you. being narrowly rear-ended with little kids in the car 3 times under 900 miles driving in the second largest city, I’m sure you wouldn’t be saying that. I’m glad you don’t have this problem but several hundreds of not thousands of drivers do, some in major accidents.

Also you do realize the cross is sitting at dealers on average of 3 weeks undergoing testing right because of this? That’s 3 weeks without a car. That’s 3 weeks of no loaner for families like myself that have this car as a sole mode of transportation. And to answer your sarcasm the second time it happened my auto start stop was actually off but wipers were on during heavy downpour but according to your logic I should not use wipers either. Smart guy.

He's a fanboy defending this vehicle at all costs. I have had many brands of vehicles, and never had this issue. I even have a NX350t fsport with start stop (also a Toyota product) and it has never stalled out like the cross did when I owned it for 2 weeks. I traded the cross for a 2023 Tacoma (dinosaur for todays standards) and I'm glad I did. The person that purchased the cross I traded in already took it in for service according to the Carfax 100 miles after they bought it. It's a shame Toyota does not hurry up and release a TSB for this issue.

Happened once a few weeks out of the dealership in January, took it to the dealership they said nothing came up when they checked it out and looks fine. The auto off/start has unfortunately mostly been driven with it off since 5000 km later and it hasn't happened again. The little I have drove it, in the rain included have been fine and the auto start felt responsive.
Had the start/stop issue happen twice on the way back from the dealership just after picking it up from purchase on May 2, 2023. Only had 10km on it and it was a rainy day. I called the dealership to speak with service and the salesman and they said they are unaware of this issue and would not take my care for maintenance unless it happens again.

Have you been able to drive it in the rain since to try and re-create? I thought there was a software update out in the last few days. I don't drive our Cross often, and it might just be in my head but a few days ago I was using the Auto Start Stop in the rain and I swear the engine starts a little quicker than before while holding the break down. I wonder if they can update through wifi but I doubt it. Our Cross is headed in a couple weeks for first oil change.

I'm no "fanboy"...thanks very much! This is the first Toyota product I've ever owned...for exactly 10 weeks now. If you took the time to read my comments, you would see that I've been plenty critical of Toyota for taking SO long to get this software update done, and out there.

But the work-around is also SO darn easy!

This "fanboy" comment is coming from someone who doesn't even own a Cross anymore.
If you disliked the Cross so much that you got rid of it so quickly, why are you even here?
Just to bash the value of the cars owned by the rest of us?

You present no solutions, and only criticize our cars, and others (who DO offer solutions) on this forum.
You don't own a Cross anymore, and dislike them so much, so why don't you just go away.

Does anyone know what they're suggesting as a solution right now?

Some software update/reflash or something else like replacing the motor in the wipers?
