Software Update

Bought a used 2023 Cross Hybrid earlier this year (20k). Dealer called and said I need to bring it in for a software update that would take 3-4 HOURS? Has anyone heard of this long of a process? I'm not even sure what's being updated. Just seemed weird to me.

Sounds like more than a software update, which only takes about 10 minutes including the time to hook up an auxiliary battery to ensure your ECU doesn't get bricked. I once had an airbag bolt replacement on a recall that required three hours due to having to remove the dash. Perhaps it is due to the queue / line buildup if all 2023 CCHs were recalled at once.

Finally got through to the dealer: Special Service Campaign 25TC03 - Multiple model years, Multiple models - TSS 3.0 Forward Recognition Camera Software Update. Software could stop the precollision system from working if it is damaged.

I’m here at the dealer now. This is exactly what they told me as well - hard to make contact with the server. They will try their best to keep it to three hours but they never know what they’re going to run into and whether they will lose contact while updating. Toward the end of his speech he told me they won’t get paid from Toyota unless they have worked a certain number of hours. I suspect that is the crux but I don’t know what that means. He said they would wash my car and do a multi point inspection as well for free.

Many scan tools have sufficient memory to hold a map. Failing that, they probably have an email / accounts server either on site or in the cloud that could be used for holding a map. I really don't understand this needless delay of connecting to Japan every time. The dealer can verify the ECU # / VIN.

Just a guess, but per the SSC : "Any authorized Toyota dealer will update the software of the forward recognition camera FREE OF CHARGE. This will update the TSS 3.0 system to software version 02.02. If the condition has occurred on a vehicle, causing damage to the forward recognition camera, the Toyota dealer will replace the forward recognition camera FREE OF CHARGE. "
Likely time includes labor to replace the camera if needed - vs. having to come back in.
