Software Update Coming to Fix Auto Stop/Start Issue

3532 Views 36 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Sofrieta
Just by told by our dealer that Toyota is aware of the problem with the Auto Stop/Start feature and a software update to fix the issue is in the works. They're not sure how long that will take, but told me it's the intermittent setting on the windshield wipers that causes the problem; I should not use that setting until the software update. Hope it won't take too long, and that it works! Anyone else hearing this?

What is the issue? I've not heard about any problem; mine is working normally.
Thanks for any clarification or link(s) to previous posts?

Yikes! 😳 I missed most of that thread. Let's hope Toyota gets a letter out to owners and a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to dealers ASAP.
What a great forum this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sold my cross after two weeks of ownership at a loss . I'm glad current owners will have a fix soon. Dealership could not replicate the issue, I even have video proof!

I have a 2022 toyota corolla cross LE with same issue. I bought it 2 weeks ago, certified preowned. I am going to the dealership today to sort this through. The dealership has treated this situation like a joke, despite it being a legitimate safety concern.

You may want to report your situation to NHTSA - NHTSA - as no 2022 Cross' are listed at this time.

I reported the problem yesterday. I went to the dealership and they acknowledged the problem and mentioned that the only fix for now is to turn off the start/stop feature. Apparently, Toyota is working on something, but who knows at this point?!?! Why sell a vehicle that has a serious safety concern!!
Can the stop-go crap be turned off permanently or do I have to continually shut it off before I drive cause I have shut it off before I drive it cause it's annoying and hard on the car as a whole in my opinion

That is because these dealerships ARE a joke. No one cares, and once someone from their family is hurt in a safety issue, then one will scream.

You have to turn it off every time you start the car. Maybe ask your mechanic if he can somehow turn it off? I am waiting for the TSB for the fix.

Someone posted that disconnecting the wiring for the hood latch will disable the s/s. I haven't had this issues but don't drive our car much anyway.
Yeah they really should make it an option to totally shut it off in the vehicle options if people actually knew how BAD it is to totally turn a vehicle on and off constantly I mean how hard it is on an engine plus the starter plus the feel is just weird I'm totally old school just like the CVT but this car has me tricked with the computer programmed shift points so I'm ok with that
The car gives you a choice to press more firmly on the brake pedal if you want to turn off the engine when at a stop. Get’s a bit of getting used to but eventually i found the sweet spot.
The start stop function is there so car manufacturers meet fuel efficiency guidelines without considering the damage it would do to the car eventually. Fuel you save will be spent on repairs somewhere down the road. But i admit that being able to turn it off completely would be great. Of all cars i’ve driven, the corolla cross’ start/stop funcrion is hardly noticeable. My wife’s Rav4 has got to be the worse…😁

I haven’t had an issue but feel like the cross is too big for me. Curious how much you lost? Did you trade it in?

The same thing happened to me at the traffic lights, the car goes out as it should, but suddenly the engine says it went off. And does not turn on. I want to quote that it doesn't always happen. Because he only has 91 miles . I have an appointment for Saturday with services. I tell him how it went. I live in Florida
Were your wipers running when it did that?
From what I read, that is what triggers the motor to die when at a stop sign. Software bug for sure!

I've gotten into a habit of always pushing the button to turn OFF the stupid Start/Stop thing, so I never have the problem. Should be able to be disabled so that it defaults to OFF, but no one has found a way to do that yet to my knowledge.

It's really hard on a non-hybrid to be doing the all this starting and stopping, and every time that happens, it needs to engage and disengage the transmission too. Too much wear and tear on too many parts (starter, transmission, etc) for WAY too little gain.

Hybrids are a totally different story however.

If I had the Wipers and the lights were active, it was raining . Now I am in service. Well, the car is new. I will let you know what they told me.

Be sure to tell them to test it with the wipers on intermittent. They should be able to replicate the issue.
