I created this petition for owners of the LE and L models about the taillights. please share this with anyone and everyone you can, including your regular friends. Let's get Toyota to do something about this for the safety of their loyal customers and their families.

Huh I was looking at the L model so it's a bit disheartening to hear about the tail lights not being great, I wonder if the bulbs themselves could be user replaced with LED ones (like just order off amazon type thing) if that'd help at all?
Adding LED bulbs would at least brighten them up a bit, but wouldn't extend light onto the liftgate. Don't let this deter you from buying an LE, it's a nice featured vehicle, this just makes me wonder why they didn't extend the taillights onto the liftgate like on the XLE...

Signed and shared.
A few days after I created this position, 2 separate people told me they were rear ended at night, the first was on his drive home from picking the Cross up at the dealer.

Signed and shared, is it possible to upgrade the tail lights?

I haven't removed the trim to see what wiring is there, but the backup light is in the hatch part of the light, so we might be able to...but XLE replacement lights are 1100 bucks from the dealer....looking at aftermarket solutions at this point.

please let me know if you find anything in the aftermarket, I’m on the search of solutions on my end, let’s see if we can find an alternative.

Does anyone know if this has changed for the 23s?

I am dealing with a similar situation with a new 2022 Corolla LE. I get flashed from drivers behind me every time I drive at night. Just realized last night that the very back lights do not illuminate unless the brake is pressed. Similar to the image in your petition, the lights are primarily on the side of the vehicle and not visible from behind.

I have been looking on Amazon for LED license plate brackets to give more light back there. Here's one I've found for $20. Some complained that it was messing up when it rained, so one guy drilled 1/8 inch holes around the plate every inch or so and that seemed to help. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0797K8SL...d=19ZFBGED9HRVI&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it_im Here's another that claims to be waterproof and is $50. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XGHW68...d=19ZFBGED9HRVI&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it_im I may get one of these or find some red reflective magnet strips and put them on the back. I may do both. If enough people sign the petition and complain, they may do something about it since Toyota prides itself on having safe vehicles. I'm sure they want to keep that reputation.

Here are some options from ebay. If it were me, i’d go for the 3rd one. Our cars still have the factory warranty so take it easy on altering anything like the wirings.

Thanks for the ideas! I think I saw the third option on Amazon as well.
Yes, the 3rd option is also available at amazon. I was looking into that a few months ago because my 2020 camry LE had tiny lights at night too compared to the XLE camry. But warranty concerns discouraged me.

Interesting… It seems the smaller, dimmer lights on lower trim levels is now a thing with Toyota. I’ve heard the same about RAV4 and Highlander and now the Camry. I found a bright license plate light bar for like $9 on Amazon. I think I may go that route for now.

I have had my LE for 8 months and never noticed this huge fault! Thank you.

My TNGA platform 2020 Corolla SE sedan was the same way - pretty wimpy taillight visibility with the lights on. Same with the left/right taillight-portion rear brake lights. There was quite a bit of poor design, obvious corner/cost-cutting & build quality issues with that vehicle versus my 2015 Yaris SE hatch (which was a great little car in comparison), & what shifted me toward getting rid of that vehicle after only 2 years & 9500 miles, and being somewhat leery of newer Toyotas in general.
