Order process?

So I've decided I want an L trim in black, FWD, no options. Approached dealer about it and was told that Toyota isn't accepting to spec orders right now due to supply chain issues and said they'd let me know if a black L trim came up on their list of 'soon to be built' but other than that i'm just kinda dead in the water so to speak. Can anyone else confirm if this is similar or different to their XP? Like is this dealer just playing games with me to try and get me to pick a higher trim or something? Should I try other dealers? Or is this 'we can't put in an order to spec' thing actually hold water, is it nationwide? Does availability vary by dealership like do I need to get on the 'pending' list at multiple local dealers in hopes of one of them getting a black L?

I would definitely contact many dealers and have them keep tabs on the car you want.
A good source is to use CarGurus.com to see what is coming in.

Also check each dealer to see which ones have a policy of adding lots of extra stuff on when the come in.

You're experience is not unique. Toyota produced over a million fewer vehicles in 2021 due to the chip shortage and other supply line issues.

My story in brief: I went to the dealer on December 23rd, 2021 and told them I wanted to be put on the list for an XLE FWD and put down a deposit and got an "estimated" Monroney sticker with an out the door price. The price and accessories could change; I was fully aware of that. They were listed to have an XLE in white or red with a build date 65 days down the road with the color(s) and interior color of my preference (any interior except black.) They had no Cross models on the lot to even look at. Two weeks later they said they just got one presold LE in and I went and looked at it. Couldn't drive it, obviously, as it was presold and the buyer was sitting in the Cross as I looked it over.

So, I'm about three weeks from possibly getting my Cross, but I'm not holding my breath. It could be many more weeks before it - or another similar model - arrives. I'm not desperate for a new car, so I'll just wait.

I emailed about 20 different dealers around my state until I found one I liked. The build date is further than I like but its not marked up and has the standard accessories that I would have bought. Go on different sites and be ready to search 200 miles out.

If you are in the South east Toyota Distributor region or Gulf state Toyota, in their website they usually mention dealer allocations, So you can check there.

My target was to get a Sonic Silver L FWD. I was not interested at all on any added options. Fortunately got one, had to wait 45 days after deposit.

This was extremely helpful, thanks!! I was able to find my local dealer and see what they have coming, was able to find a few slightly farther out from me (but not too far) that have exact trim/spec I want so I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they're reserved already. Thanks again!!

Also best case scenario for pricing should be = NADA Invoice price - Manufacturer rebate + tax-tag-fees
NADA Website link for invoice price: NADA Values | Used Car Values | Car Book Values

Thanks! That was gonna be my next question cause I found a couple locations near me that have the black L trim arriving in the next month or so but most seem to add on a phone/charger cable package (which lol i def don't need that) and this toyoguard platinum/paint protector thing which i also dont rly want (like i can figure out where to get oil changes on my own and not too worried about the paint, this car will be in my garage anyway 99% of the time, basically just a grocery getter). I suppose I'll just call the couple dealers and see if they are willing to write up a contract w/o those, worried though that they're gonna not budge on acct of how in demand cars are right now :/.

Looks like NADA with destination fee is saying 23,410 so ideally with 6% tax I'd be out the door at 24,815. But I have a feeling they're gonna fight that so yeah idk. We'll see how it goes I guess haha.

I just got an update from my dealer. They expect my Cross to be delayed another month. They have a total of eight vehicles on their lot.

XLE FWD. color is wind chill pearl (extra $ for that) and a few accessories for $1,200.
If I could find a Mazda CX30 or CX5 on a lot I'd go for it. That engine in the Cross is anemic, but okay for my needs.

I didn’t know those Mazdas were scarce.

In central Florida they are.

Hi I ordered the same one and the dealership told me 4 to 6 months.
I'm in Ottawa Ontario Canada.
Where abouts are you located?

I live in eastern Ontario and have had great success ordering / taking delivery of a Cross and an Outback from respective dealers in the Toronto area. These are new cars that have either been ordered and cancelled by the buyer or ordered months back from the dealer on the expectation that before it arrives at their dealership it will be sold… to me as example from Toyota, the time from making the deposit to delivery will be less than three months. You have to be willing to accept a trim or colour as it is offered.

Well I hope I don't wait the full 6 months

Hi! I was just wondering when you placed your order. Last month, I had one dealership in ottawa tell me the wait was 3-4 months, and another tell me it was 6-9. Now, today, the first dealership is telling me it’s a 12 month wait.
