How to get the HYBRID this summer

Here is my story so far.

I want the Cross Hybrid. I went to a Toyota dealership and placed a $500 deposit down as she said about two other people did this already. We looked at the 3 models online and she asked me the color I liked and what add-ons. and she mentioned it is unlikely her dealership will even get the base S model. She said they won’t order my specific car to meet exactly what I want, and if I don’t like the car whenever one comes,I can have my deposit back.

So it sounds as if they are just going to order what they figure the public will want. She quoted my trade-in car at $17000 but will need to requote it when I go to purchase and she gave me their finance payment application and sample payment for the balance, which was going to be over $16,000.

As far as the time frame, I was told she has no idea.

Is this the only way to get the hybrid. I mean, would another dealership let me choose exactly how I want it built and the order it for me? I have an idea of what I’m looking for, the SE or the XSE in wind chill pearl or sonic grey. I can’t see why she couldn’t just take my order as I want to buy it and then have it made that way.

I have never tried to get a car before it was allotted so any advice would be appreciated.

I did as you have, and I'm 1st in line at my dealership. Waiting to see if I will be able to make a specific order, or if Toyota is just going to deal out the cars like cards to the dealers. Good news is, June isn't far off !

In my experience when buying my '22 XLE FWD Cross the process was the same. With a refundable $500. deposit I could order any model and color/interior combination as long as I was willing to wait for it to be built. I chose an XLE with a light interior and would take white, red or whatever came in - with the option to refuse the Cross that came in. I waited 5 1/2 months but got my first choice (Barcelona red with macadamia interior) as only two arrived at the end of the wait.

Your wait time may be compounded by the fact that hybrid batteries are probably still in short supply. Also, high volume dealers get first choice from corporate, so check around other dealers and see whether they have a shorter wait time (be prepared to be told anything though.)

FWIW, I was told that wind chill pearl isn't a high priority in the paint dept. at the factory. That may have changed.

I called to see where I would be on a deposit list and she said there’s one other person but that he or she wants a different trim so basically I’m first. She can’t even place any orders to Toyota for these yet, so it is a ways off unfortunately.

I put down a $1000 deposit yesterday. From what I have read, the dealers may be able to submit preferred configurations, but there is no such thing as "custom order".

That is what I’ve been told. They can request trims and color preferences but I can’t tell them exactly what to make.

A dealership emailed me. They show they have the hybrid. So their price on the XSE is showing $34,987. It looks like it’s marked up? Hopefully, the dealership I placed a deposit down on won’t do the same?

That's the correct MSRP because of the added options. The price can go higher if you add JBL audio and adaptive headlights.

There's that $2000 "dealer adjustment", although I have seen much higher numbers.

It's interesting that both cars reported so far are in Pittsburgh, PA. The configurations are the same except for the color, which accounts for the $425 difference in MSRP.

I don’t like seeing the dealer adjustment.
Yeah, that’s not good. I would never be that anxious to be the first on my block to own one and pay extra for the privilege.

I checked with a local dealer. He said there are no cars available anywhere across the US .
He agrees with me that it is very strange that a dealer in Pennsylvania has a serial number on an actual car.

Interesting. I don’t know how any of this works.
Out of curiosity to see what the dealership would say about their $2000 dealer adjustment cost, I messaged them to say I am interested but won’t pay any dealer adjustments. Someone emailed me and said it’s still available. And she said the good news is that as long as if I’m in PA, that they are at MSRP. Does anyone know what she’s talking about before I email her to ask?

Not really, but back when I was looking to buy a regular Cross some waived the markup almost immediately.

The dealers have been told to prioritize local customers over out-of-area shoppers. And the locals shall not be gouged. :)

Having a VIN probably means the build process has started. It will probably take 2-3 months before the car shows up at the dealership.
