Hi guys,
I have the Corolla Cross L trim with FWD only. I put over 680 miles on it since mid November.
I noticed that, when the Low Fuel/Empty light comes on and I go to fill it up, I can only put in 9.5 gallons in it. I don't overfill the tank - if it clicks, I stop fueling. The analog gauge shows Full. The range estimate (DTE) showed between 280 and 310 miles after each fill up, not more. The mileages vary between 29mpg to 32mpg.
The advertised tank size is 12.4 gallons. If I can put in only 9.5 gallons at each fill up, does that mean there's 3 gallons of reserve fuel. Seems a bit excessive. It is almost 25% of the tank capacity. On my previous cars I would have about 1 gallon of reserve fuel - 20 to 30 mile of driving range.
The ones of you who own this car, have you noticed this issue? How much do you put in the tank when you fill up?

I'm not that worried, just annoyed. The specs say 12.4 gallons. I can understand 1 to 1.5 gallons of reserve fuel, but 3 gallons!? Does that mean I can drive another 100 miles after the Fuel Empty light comes on?
And come on, what sort of Sports Utility Vehicle shows you just 300 miles of range with a full tank of gas. It is barely enough for the Corolla sedan. They should have made the tank a bit bigger. 15 gallons would have been more SUV like.
For 300 miles range might as well buy an all electric vehicle.

When my tank is full, the mileage to empTy reads 360 miles divided by 32 = 11.2 gallons so a reasonable reserve would be 1.1-1.2 gallons.

I have a 2022 Toyota Corolla cross sport all wheel drive and I've been told that it is normal for this model vehicle for the needle that's for the gas needle to not work properly unless you wait until it goes down to half a tank to then put gas in it it's extremely important for me to know if anyone else who owns this type of vehicle is having that issue again I've been told that I have to wait until the tank is halfway empty for me to put gas and for the needle to Mark properly anyone please share with me thank you

I am having this same issue. The most I get on a full tank is 310 miles. I find myself refueling quite often as my work commute during the week is long. I’ve tried putting different brands of gas but it’s not giving anything over 310.

My AWD version (slightly larger tank 13.2 vs 12.4 gallons) has less than 1k miles on it.
Just filled it up for the 2nd time, and it read about 350 miles to empty.
When I filled it, the display said I only had about 30 miles to empty...HOWEVER, the pump shut off at 10.6 gallons.

So, I think we can assume that there's at least a gallon or two left in the tank when it gets near zero miles left.

I'm getting about 33-34 MPG with a mix of all kinds of driving. I do spend a good amount of time on 2 lane roads where I'm usually going about 60 mph. The Cross mileage seems to peak at around that speed. Higher speeds and the mileage goes down some. A lot depends on if you are driving into a head-wind or not too.

For sure...A larger tank would be welcome! I make frequent 1000 mile drives in one day at about 80 mph, and a larger tank would allow me to cut the drive time down with less fuel stops. I don't expect it will get such great mileage at 80.

[ I just got a 2023 awd version. The gas gauge results confused me also. There appears to be 2gallons that is below empty that serves to keep the pump cool and lubricated as well as preventing air and debris from entering the pump and injection system. There also seems to be 3.2 gallons above full. Each of the "quarter marks" appears to mark off about two gallons of available fuel. 2+2+2+2+2 +3.2 gets to the stated 13.2 capacity. The calculated range indicator obviously is using 11 gallons times about 30 mpg to state the available range. I just put 424 miles on a full tank down to a stated remaining range of 11 miles and the fill-up was 11.016 gallons. So I guess I could risk my pump and injection system and go another 75 miles but a better plan in to treat it as an 11 gallons tank.
I'm getting about 37 mpg traveling mileage. 42.7 for one 104 mile jaunt down out of the mountains.]

I often get 90+ mpg coming down from Nederland to Boulder CO. Not really fair of course because the motor is mostly sitting up there doing nothing but keeping us warm. :)

Do you really think running the tank down to say, 1 gallon risks the fuel pump and injection system? That really doesn't sound like a Toyota kind of thing to do. It's not something I'd do on a frequent basis, but sometimes when I'm making my long drives, I do try my best to minimize fuel stops. That usually means running the gauge all the way to E (once I get to know the car). I never run the tank dry, but do push it on those 1k mile trips. That will be especially needed with the tiny tank in the Cross.

Guess I've been spoiled by the 18.5 gallon tank on my Subaru Outback. Cruising range can get up to 600 miles at 33 mpg, which it often gets. Oh well, I guess I'll get out and stretch more often in the Cross.
