Hello all,

My cross has 28k km on the clock, and would like your opinion on the following. I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same.

1. No matter how conservative I drive, city driving with some traffic in the morning. And a 300+ km trip this weekend, I can't get my Ave consumption below 8.8L per 100km. Is this normal?

2. Sound system has a tremendous amount of bass, even with the bass turned all the way down in settings. Note the Xi does not come with the touch display.

3. Outside noise. I previously owned an audi a4 and the drive was so quiet, I could barely hear other cars while the windows were closed. However, with the cross I can even hear some wind. I've been told it's a common thing with Toyota, and drove an urban cruiser (2022 model, with 700km on the clock). It was worse than the croos. Should I just make peace with it lol?

4. Last question I promise. I am looking for an after market touch display radio for the cross. Any recommendations other than the manufacturer model as its quite pricey.

Thanks
Tash

Hi Tash J. Fuel consumption is really based on a lot of factors…how bad is the traffic in your place? What kind of fuel you fill her up with? Do you have a lot of hilly roads? How heavy is your foot on the gas pedal? Here in the US, the corolla cross is rated at 31mpg city and 33 highway for the fwd variants. I can do 33mpg traveling at 65mph-70mph on a strait highway but as soon as I reach an incline on the highway the consumption drops. City driving best I can do is 28mpg…I’m in LA so traffic during rush hour is bad. 8.8 liter per 100km is around 26-27mpg So I guess that would be acceptable depending on how bad the traffic is.
Outside noise is not as bad as other cars out there, basically you have a corolla so that explains a lot. Not comparable to an Audi in terms of nvh levels. Even a camry is a lot quieter than a corolla cross.
I doubt there would be an aftermarket touch screen stereo that would fit. I maybe wrong, you could probably ask after market dealers/installers about it.

I'm a bit shocked at the fuel consumption mentioned here, as it's nowhere near my experience. As mentioned, there are a lot of factors that influence fuel consumption, so not all can be easily compared, but the difference is staggering. I have 1.8L AWD (hybrid) and almost exclusively drive in congested urban traffic (avg. 20km/h or 12mph). My fuel consumption is 21.2 km/l (4.7 l/100km) which is near 50mpg, which is nearly half of what you both experience. Understand that probably smaller engine (1.8L vs 2L) and hybrid makes some difference, but this much?

Yes you will have better fuel economy with a hybrid. I have a 1.8CVT (47 litre/14 gallon fuel tank/) which has less toque. However, I did expect better fuel economy.

I recently did a 150km/93 trip mile with a full tank of fuel before I left home. I set cruise control to 125kmph/72mph and went to about 135kmph when overtaking a few cars. When I reached my destination it used just over half tank of fuel.

But when I returned home, I used just less than 1/4 tank of fuel. The only difference was that I set cruise control to 115kmph/70mph on the return trip.

Hi JktCC…driving in city traffic is where a hybrid is very efficient. At the speeds you mentioned your gas engine rarely starts anymore. 🙂

TashJ,1/4 tank of gas would usually take me 90miles. That would be 30% city and 70% highways with speeds of around 70-75mph. If I would do 65mph i’m sure my fuel consumption will greatly improve. But I can’t, because cars around me travel way above that so I have to keep up with them.
